后硬核（Post-Hardcore）的浪潮在某种程度上不如情绪音乐（ Emo）的浪潮那样界限分明。不过公认的是，“后硬核第二浪潮”（Second Wave Post-Hardcore）始于1988年Fugazi的首张专辑。至于它的终结，2002年是合情合理的，因为在这一年发行了Glassjaw的巨作，以及一系列定义了“后硬核第三浪潮”（ Third Wave Post-Hardcore）声音的专辑，即Finch的《What It Is to Burn》、The Used的《Self-titled》和My Chemical Romance的《I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love》。
